Can Bayesian Models of Cognition Show That We Are (Epistemically) Rational?

چکیده

Abstract “According to [Bayesian] models” in cognitive neuroscience, says a recent textbook, “the human mind behaves like capable data scientist”. Do they? That is: do such models show we are rational? I argue that Bayesian of cognition, perhaps surprisingly, don’t and indeed can’t, Bayesian-rational. The key reason is they appeal approximations, fact carries significant implications. After outlining the argument, critique two responses, seen neuroscience. One can be as approximately Bayes-rational, while other reconceives norms rationality.

Bayesian models of cognition

For over 200 years, philosophers and mathematicians have been using probability theory to describe human cognition. While the theory of probabilities was first developed as a means of analyzing games of chance, it quickly took on a larger and deeper significance as a formal account of how rational agents should reason in situations of uncertainty (Gigerenzer et al., 1989; Hacking, 1975). Our go...

Bayesian models of cognition.

There has been a recent explosion in research applying Bayesian models to cognitive phenomena. This development has resulted from the realization that across a wide variety of tasks the fundamental problem the cognitive system confronts is coping with uncertainty. From visual scene recognition to on-line language comprehension, from categorizing stimuli to determining to what degree an argument...

METHOD This study describes the nature and extent of addiction in the elderly using DSM IV items. RESULTS We noted a high prevalence of addiction in our population and identified a two-factor profile in sub...
